There was a 'fair
amount' of illiteracy in past times, especially with spelling of
BELLERT.
According to Allan Bellert, such names
originated from the name BELER (a French type-of 'nick-name' for a
shepherd), from this point it appeared to vary over the centuries,
especially prior to 1900.
The name, for whatever reason
transformed from BELER, to BELLER, to BELLERT and sometimes BELLETT
(all of which appear to have originated in Central France (ie. Cantal
region), however, much migration took place in the 1600's to 1800's
(mainly due to the religious wars during those periods); to escape the
Catholic Church persecution they fled (and were invited) to Prussian
(Brandenberg) , also Switzerland, Holland, England, Ireland and even a
few to Italy (in the main, they were Calvinists or French Reformed
religions) - counties like U.S.A., South Africa, Australia were much
later on.
Most of the BELLERT's that Allan has
made contact with both in Germany and France do NOT know why the 'T'
was added - while the name BELLERT is reasonably rare, the name BELLER
is quite common, especially in the Southern German area's such a Baden.
Even the name Bell-aire appears to have
originated from BELLERT or BELLER; when peoples of such names arrived
at Ellis Island (NY), they were verbally asked what their name was -
hence, it 'sounded like' Bell-air to the imigration officials of that
time.
